- Around 22 Weeks of Gestation: Eyelash development begins in the womb. At approximately 22 weeks of pregnancy, the hair follicles that will eventually become eyelashes start to form. These early stages involve the differentiation of cells in the eyelid area to create the structures necessary for lash growth.
- 26 to 28 Weeks: By 26 to 28 weeks of gestation, the first set of fine, short eyelashes, known as lanugo, begin to appear. Lanugo eyelashes are very thin and soft and cover the baby's eyelids. They serve a protective function in the womb and are part of the baby's overall prenatal development.
- First Few Months: After birth, the lanugo eyelashes may gradually fall out, and new, more developed eyelashes start to grow in their place. This process usually begins within the first few weeks to a couple of months after birth. The new eyelashes are typically darker and thicker than the lanugo lashes.
- 6 to 12 Months: As the baby grows, the eyelashes continue to develop and become more prominent.
