Potential Complications

  • Corneal Abrasion: The eyelash can scratch the surface of the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye. This can cause pain, redness, tearing, and a feeling of something being stuck in the eye. In severe cases, it may affect vision.
  • Infection: Bacteria can adhere to the eyelash and enter the eye, leading to an infection such as conjunctivitis (pink eye). Symptoms may include redness, swelling, discharge, and increased sensitivity to light.
  • Conjunctival Irritation: The conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the eyelids, can become irritated. This may cause discomfort, redness, and a gritty sensation.

What to Do

  • Try Gentle Flushing: Use sterile saline solution or artificial tears to flush your eye. Tilt your head to the side with the affected eye facing down and pour the solution into the eye from the inner corner, allowing it to run out naturally. Blink gently to help wash out the eyelash.
  • Seek Medical Help: If flushing doesn't work or if you experience any pain, vision problems, excessive redness, or discharge, see an eye doctor immediately. An ophthalmologist or optometrist has the tools and expertise to safely remove the eyelash and check for any damage or infection. They may use a slit lamp to examine your eye closely and use special instruments to remove the eyelash if it's deeply embedded or causing problems.
  • Avoid Self-Treatment: Do not attempt to use sharp objects or unsterilized tools to remove the eyelash, as this can cause more damage. Also, avoid rubbing your eye, as it can push the eyelash deeper into the eye or cause further irritation.

After the eyelash is removed, the doctor may prescribe eye drops or ointments to treat any irritation or infection. It's important to follow their instructions carefully and attend any follow-up appointments to ensure your eye heals properly.
